Overview of role:
WestJet is seeking a Senior Network Security Engineer to join our Technology organization and play a critical role in strengthening and evolving our enterprise network security posture. The role operations w ithin t he Network Services Team, working in close partnership with Cybersecurity, Platform, and Product teams across the organization.
The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in network security architecture, engineering, and operations, with the ability to plan, design, implement, optimize, and support modern network security platforms in a fast-paced, highly critical environment. This individual will translate business and security objectives into scalable, resilient, and secure network security solutions aligned with industry best practices and zero trust principles.
As a senior technical contributor, the Sr Network Security Engineer will lead medium-to-large initiatives, provide technical direction and advisory support to stakeholders, and continuously improve security controls, tooling, and operational practices. This role requires strong analytical thinking, excellent collaboration skills, and a passion for automation, innovation, and security-by-design.
Key Deliverables:
- Design, implement, operate and continuously improve WestJet’s network security infrastructure across on-premises, data center, and cloud environments.
- Lead the deployment, lifecycle management, and optimization of network security technologies, including:
- VMware NSX-T (Must have)
- Palo Alto NGFW and Prisma Access
- Corelight IDS and related detection platforms
- Drive enterprise firewall initiatives, including implementation of new firewall technologies and strategic enhancement of existing platforms.
- Lead and deliver medium to large-scale initiatives related to network security platforms and associated key security controls.
- Collaborate closely with Cybersecurity, Network, Platform, and Product teams to embed security best practices into new designs and initiatives.
- Act as a trust technical advisor to technology and business stakeholders on network security, architecture, risks, and best practices.
- Optimize network security policies, rulesets, and configurations to improve security posture, performance, and operational efficiency.
- Automate and streamline network security operations where applicable.
- Develop and maintain high-quality technical documentation, standards, procedures, and network/security diagrams.
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation, including evenings and weekends, to support critical security infrastructure.
- Ensure solutions meet requirements for security, resiliency, scalability, performance, and compliance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of operational processes, incident response readiness, and platform reliability.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of experience in network security engineering roles involving the design, implementation, and support of large-scale enterprise or data center environments.
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of network security principles, protocols, architectures, and technologies.
- Strong experience with industry-leading network security platforms, including:
- Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW)
- Network segmentation and micro-segmentation (e.g., NSX-T)
- Zero Trust Security Architecture
- Software-Defined Perimeter concepts
- Experience with cloud security engineering, particularly within Azure environments, is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated expertise in platform configuration, policy design, tuning, optimization, and lifecycle maintenance.
- Strong understanding of security-by-design methodologies and secure integration patterns across network and platform services.
- Solid knowledge of the network threat landscape and security controls used to mitigate modern threats.
- Experience automating network and security infrastructure provisioning and management. (e.g., scripting, APIs, IaC tools)
- Strong understanding of information security risk management, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices, including:
- PCI DSS
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Certifications considered strong assets:
- Palo Alto certifications
- VMware NSX certifications
- Cloud security certifications (Azure Security Engineer or equivalent)
