ASL19, Farsi for Article 19, is a technology and media organization that helps people access information, circumvent censorship and counter misinformation. Our team is based in Toronto but currently works remote and hybrid. We are recruiting a Product Manager to join our team and they will be reporting to the Director of Product. Our ideal candidate is a tech savvy, detail-oriented, an effective communicator and a stellar (manager of information), preferably with experience in product management. We are looking for a passionate, self-driven and positive individual with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
As our projects incorporate high user security and privacy protections, we require the successful candidate to understand user privacy and discretion, and can hold themselves to high standards of confidentiality and integrity. Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility is to manage the Product Development team and to work with the Director of Product and Executive Director on the following items:
Team Management:
- Forecast and allocate the team's resources and budgets for multiple projects, including planning team’s time, and approving timesheets and time off.
- Delegate tasks and manage the Design Team in order to stay on track in terms of timeline and deliverables
- Identify gaps and plan for scaling the teams to deliver according to project timelines and work plans, considering the available resources and long term sustainability.
- Responsible for cultivating team engagement, performance and commitment to the projects.
- In partnership with the HR department, recruit and hire new talent and support their onboarding into the team.
- Following the organization’s policies, carry out performance reviews, and recommend raises for their team.
- Co-create a productive and positive work environment, including by facilitating collaboration and participation both within their team and with other department teams
- Coach, mentor, and support their team
- Recommend and implement personal and professional growth opportunities for their teams in compliance with company policies
Product Management:
- Define a vision for organization's product(s) and align internal and external stakeholders around the vision for each product
- Prioritize product features and capabilities and create a shared product strategy across teams and stakeholders.
- Manage product requirements and features in order to deliver them in a timely manner
- Design, implement, and oversee the product management process
- Improve and introduce new product management processes to elevate and cultivate cross-department collaboration
- Establish, coordinate, oversee and maintain product road maps in collaboration with various teams and Product Leads
- Collaborate with the Design team to create prototypes of new products or improve existing designs.
- Continually ship product enhancements and/or new features that drive to improve users’ product satisfaction and drive user acquisition and retention.
- Monitor the performance of products and establish plans for improvements as necessary
- Review user/customer feedback to evaluate user experience and understand/represent user needs
- Track the market and develop competitive analysis
- Establish baselines and goals to determine which products are performing well and which need improvement.
- Co-lead the development and implementation of new projects with clients and partners
- Conduct outreach and identify new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration relevant to our mission
- Meet with clients and partners to discuss product development needs and providing proposals for solutions
- Lead the product-related parts of proposals, including product vision, impact, features, setting RMP targets and developing team and marketing budgets.
- Manage and write reports for projects related to work plans and activities.
- Develop and maintain all systems and workflows within your portfolio, proactively identifying, monitoring, and initiating improvements as required to ensure smooth and efficient workflows
- Communicate overall team progress, challenges, successes, and feedback to the Director of Product
- Other tasks related to the Product Management portfolio as needed or assigned by your Supervisor in the scope of this position
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred, with a bonus for degrees in software engineering or computer science.
- +5 years of experience working preferably within internet freedom, cybersecurity and other startup space.
- Familiarity with current best practices in internal processes and tools across Marketing, Customer Experience, Sales, and Engineering.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to consistently and quickly deliver compelling presentations and documentation.
- A proactive person with a strong customer-first mentality who assumes initiative and ownership.
- Experience using data to inform product decisions, evaluate impact, and iterate on product features to meet community and partner needs.
- Leader: you're hands-on and willing to step in wherever needed, whether it's managing a project directly or handling ad hoc tasks to keep the team focused and on track
- Effectively communicate the benefits and requirements of every product to a range of audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, each with its own timeline, budget, and goals.
- A person obsessed with UX who relentlessly focuses on creating intuitive, enjoyable, and user-centered experiences, constantly refining designs based on user feedback and data.
Bonus:
- Proficiency with VPNs and circumvention technologies.
- Strong understanding of AI and ML technologies and their applications.
- Strong understanding of global internet freedom issues.
