Position Summary
As an Industrial Control System (ICS), Battery Management System (BMS) and IoT Cyber-Security Software Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing cybersecurity measures for our large-scale battery systems used in maritime vessels. This position involves ensuring that our battery systems meet regulatory standards and are resilient against cyber threats. You will possess technical knowledge of cybersecurity practices and have a strong drive to secure computerized control systems. In this position you will work with other motivated and experienced engineers to create software tools and systems to protect against motivated threat actors while providing the functionality required in our increasingly digital world.
Reports to: VP, Battery Management, Modeling and Analytics
Salary Range: $70,000 to $90,000 CAD per year (higher compensation may be considered for candidates with significantly more relevant experience).
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement cybersecurity measures for large-scale battery systems to ensure compliance with maritime standards.
- Perform security assessments, vulnerability testing, and risk analyses of our BMS and IoT systems.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate secure architectures into the design of battery management systems.
- Create software tools for validating security measures and improving the reliability of our system security.
- Prepare product documentation demonstrating compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to cybersecurity in maritime applications.
- Work with IT and engineering to ensure that the company's IoT networks are monitored for security breaches, incidents, and anomalies using advanced cybersecurity tools and techniques.
- Participate in investigations of cybersecurity incidents experienced by our customers.
- Stay current with emerging cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and technologies relevant to ICS and IoT environments, particularly in the maritime sector.
- Liaise with external partners, clients, regulators, and industry groups to share knowledge and stay informed about the latest developments in ICS and IoT cyber-security.
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in cybersecurity and/or secure software development.
Functional Skills:
- Strong understanding of ICS/SCADA architectures, protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, OPC), IoT communication protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP), and communication networks.
- Strong understanding of Linux security architecture and implementation.
- Programming or scripting skills (e.g., Rust, Python, Bash) for automation and tool development.
- Proficient in technical writing (in English).

- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex security concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
Assets:
- CompTIA Security+, ISC2 CSSLP, or equivalent certification
- Hands-on experience with security tools such as intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), SIEM (Security Information and Event Management), and firewalls.
- Familiarity with NIST, ISA/IEC 62443, and other cybersecurity frameworks and standards for industrial control and IoT systems.
- Experience in the maritime industry or with large-scale battery systems.
- Knowledge of the IACS UR-E27 Cyber Resilience of On-Board Systems and Equipment for maritime vessels.
- Knowledge of physical security principles as they relate to ICS and IoT.
- Experience with threat hunting and forensics in ICS and IoT environments.
