Required Skills & Experience
Our client is seeking a in-house counsel, commercial lawyer focusing on digital Product & Consumer Counsel to support a rapidly evolving ecommerce and technology business. Reporting into senior legal leadership, this role will serve as a trusted advisor to product, technology, customer experience, marketing, and commercial teams on legal matters related to digital products, consumer protection, privacy, ecommerce, and emerging technologies. This is a highly collaborative, business-facing role that requires a lawyer who can provide practical guidance throughout the product lifecycle while helping the business innovate responsibly and compliantly.
- 7-10+ years of corporate commercial technology, and/or consumer law experience gained through enterprise in-house legal department.
- Experience as in-house counsel supporting technology, ecommerce, digital product, or consumer-facing businesses.
- JD/LLB and membership in good standing with a Canadian law society.
- Strong understanding of technology, ecommerce platforms, digital products, and consumer-focused business models.
- Experience partnering closely with product management, user experience, technology, and business teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
-Ability to review and advise on product designs, digital experiences, user journeys, and Figma screens to identify legal and regulatory considerations.
- Strong knowledge of consumer protection law and obligations applicable to online businesses.
- Experience drafting, reviewing, and advising on Product Terms of Use, Terms of Sale, order confirmations, website disclosures, and product information pages.
- Experience developing and reviewing customer-facing disclosures, disclaimers, notices, and legal language embedded within digital experiences.
- Understanding of how legal requirements should be incorporated into product interfaces and customer communications.
- Experience advising on privacy law and customer data collection, usage, and disclosure practices.
- Experience supporting marketing, promotional, advertising, and customer engagement initiatives.
- Strong commercial contracting experience, including drafting and negotiating technology, vendor, and strategic partnership agreements.
- Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
-Experience working on mobile applications, digital marketplaces, online checkout experiences, or customer account platforms.
-Familiarity with privacy-by-design and consumer-focused product development methodologies.
- Experience supporting customer care, customer advocacy, or consumer compliance functions.
-Exposure to advertising law, digital marketing, loyalty programs, customer engagement initiatives, or promotional campaigns.
- Experience conducting legal reviews of UX/UI design changes before product launches.
- Able to work onsite five days per week in Mississauga
- Comfortable operating in a director-level role without direct reports
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
- Experience advising on artificial intelligence, generative AI, machine learning, and emerging AI regulatory frameworks.
- Experience developing AI governance standards, internal guidance, or responsible AI policies.
- Previous experience supporting large-scale ecommerce, retail technology, marketplace, fintech, or digital platform businesses.
