Role Responsibilities

Technology and Innovation is responsible for the administration of part 2 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act). In addition, the Data, Privacy, and Innovation Division delivers the privacy program for all Government of Alberta departments and some of their agencies, boards, and commissions.

Reporting to the Manager, Privacy Services, you will work as a member of a team delivering protection of privacy services in accordance with applicable legislation, policies, and processes to enable compliance with the FOIP Act. Responsibilities include conducting low complexity investigations, responding to low complexity requests for advice and assisting Senior Privacy Advisors on medium/high complexity privacy files. You will consult with clients internally and externally, identify and resolve issues, and so much more!

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Supports Privacy Services in ensuring adherence to the protection of privacy and security provisions under Part 2 of the FOIP Act associated with the collection, use and disclosure of personal information:
    • Prepares routine privacy files.
    • Responds to general privacy complaints received and supports the investigation process.
    • Provides information to the client ministry on Personal Information Banks and Schedule 1 Public Body listings.
    • Assists the Senior Privacy Advisor and/or Manager on complex privacy advice questions, privacy breach investigations and privacy risk assessments completed under Part 2 of the FOIP Act.


  • Analyzes and compiles relevant reference material for internal and external stakeholders concerning privacy legislation and research that supports the application of the FOIP provisions:
    • Provides written and verbal summary analysis of legal advice, consultation advice, and program/business area advice to the Senior Privacy Advisors and/or Manager.
    • Ensures documentation and Privacy Services decision-making records meet the GoA information and records management standards. (Electronic and Hardcopy).
    • Prepares reporting and statistical analyzes of Privacy Services files.
    • Understands the situation, question, and business context.
    • Other related duties as assigned by management.

    Your success in this position is built on well-developed research and analytical skills, attention to detail and good verbal and written communication skills. It would also be enhanced by awareness of access and privacy legislation and government operations, programs and services. Proficient organizational and time management skills are required to work independently and in a team setting. The ability to build strong relationships with clients and peers and to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within tight timelines is essential.

    Qualifications

    Requirements:

    • University graduation in a related field such as Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Law.
    • No experience required.

    Equivalencies: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

    • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
    • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

    Assets

    • A certification in Information Access and Protection of Privacy (IAPP).
    • Experience working with the Alberta FOIP Act, legislation, and regulations as it relates to collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.
    • Experience researching and referencing legislation, policy, procedures, and regulations.
    • Experience preparing reporting and statistical analysis.
    • Experience in information privacy specific roles.
    • Experience with records management, privacy and security concepts and principles.
    • Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.
