The Network Engineer fulfills a senior technical role within the Network Operations team, taking ownership of the design, planning, prioritization, and execution of tasks related to network upgrades and maintenance cycles. This individual completes implementations and deployments that are technically complex or within critical areas of the network infrastructure.

The incumbent provides guidance to staff in the areas of systems management and technical support and works closely with the management and members of the network operations team to solve complex infrastructure-wide issues. Additionally, the incumbent works on IT infrastructure-related projects and coordinates consulting engagements and participates in the management of partner, vendor, and service provider relationships across all campus locations.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with approximately two days on-site at the Doon campus in Kitchener, and three days remote.

Responsibilities

  • Plans for the provision of network support services and provides guidance and recommendations for effective deployment of resources
  • Takes ownership of complex network related problems and provides senior technical expertise ensuring solutions to the problems are logically sound and viable
  • Maximizes network performance both wired and wireless through ongoing monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Instructs and demonstrates the correct troubleshooting methodologies and social interactions used to effectively resolve service issues in a professional manner
  • Fulfills a mentoring role needed to enhance the technical knowledge and skillset of the team
  • Maintains and ensures that established standards are followed and adhered to for any production deployments
  • Works in cooperation with IT management and corporate risk managers to incorporate preventative security measures into deployed network solutions
  • Responsible for designing, planning, prioritization, and execution of tasks and is the single point of contact for project updates
  • Works closely with stakeholders, managers, vendors, and service providers on all aspects and stages of a network infrastructure project
  • Reviews and evaluates all network equipment to determine maintenance or upgrade priority and creates an equipment maintenance place for the team
  • Schedules and coordinates tasks in consultation with Manager, Network Operations and other members of the team considering potential service outages or procedural risks
  • Installs, configures, and programs switches, routers and firewalls as needed to facilitate connectivity, optimum performance, and reliability of the College network
  • Administers firewalls, wireless controllers, routing, and switching devices (including cloud-based services) as required
  • Maintains and follows industry best practices related to network and infrastructure security
  • Monitors operations for potential data leakage, account/systems compromise, or vulnerabilities, escalating as required
  • Adheres to all security best practices for operational support and privileged access rights as there is exposure to critical data, proper data stewardship must be taken

Qualifications

  • Four-year Degree in Information Technology or a related field of study
  • Minimum eight years of practical experience providing network-focused technical support in a large-scale network environment and experience in planning, architecting, and implementing large-scale enterprise-class networking hardware and software
  • Similar or equivalent certification in the following; Aruba Certified Mobility Professional / Aruba Networking Campus Access, Cisco Certified Network Professional / Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional, Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate, PCNSA- Palo Alto Network Certified Network Security Administrator
  • Experience with the design, implementation, and ongoing support of a multi-location enterprise network infrastructure
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and select the appropriate action
  • Good planning and organizational skills to establish priorities and meet deadlines under stressful conditions
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills to be able to present high-level technical information to a less-than-technical audience
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development to stay current with technology
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of back-end enterprise services (DHCP, DNS) as well as networking best practices and troubleshooting
  • Well accustomed to producing logical and concise documentation for use as knowledge base content and training material
  • Strong foundational knowledge of operating systems, virtualization platforms and cloud technologies (i.e. Windows Hyper-V, VMware, Microsoft Azure)
  • Leadership ability to provide guidance to staff and part-time student workers
  • Effective use of strong communication, teamwork, time management, and organizational skillsets
