The High Prairie School Division
Is Inviting Applicants For
Cyber Security and Privacy Specialist
High Prairie School Division is seeking a Cyber Security and Privacy Specialist to lead our technical information security efforts and ensure rigorous compliance with the
Alberta Access to Information Act (ATIA) and the
Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).
This role is the critical link between technical infrastructure and legislative oversight. You will work in a core team alongside our Network Analyst and the Privacy and Access Officer (PAO) to implement "reasonable security arrangements" that protect personal and sensitive data. You will translate high-level privacy policies into technical configurations, ensuring that HPSD's network infrastructure remains resilient and compliant.
Key Responsibilities
- Network Security & Zone Management: Collaborate with the Network Analyst to maintain perimeters for HPSD's Security Zones (Restricted, Internal, External, and Public). You will ensure these zones meet specific authentication standards, such as two-factor or biometric authentication for restricted repositories.
- Legislative Coordination: Work under the direction of the PAO to ensure all technical safeguards align with provincial privacy laws.
- Audit Logging & Threat Detection: Configure and actively monitor system audit logs to detect unauthorized access, anomalous behavior, or bulk extraction of data.
- Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs): Provide technical analysis for PIAs on new systems or practices, including conducting Algorithmic Impact Assessments for high-risk AI activities.
- Privacy Breach Response: Serve as the technical lead during a breach response, coordinating with the Network Analyst on forensics and containment while reporting findings to the PAO.
- Data Integrity: Ensure that all personal information is encrypted during transmission over external networks and that all data storage remains within Canada.
- ATIA Request Management: Coordinate the technical search, retrieval, and severing of digital records across all HPSD platforms to ensure the timely and accurate fulfillment of Alberta Access to Information Act (ATIA) requests
Required Qualifications
- Legislative Knowledge: An existing understanding of ATIA and POPA is preferred; however, we highly value a demonstrated willingness and aptitude to rapidly learn and apply these Alberta-specific legislative frameworks to technical environments.
- Technical Security Expertise: Proven ability to implement technical safeguards, including firewalls, intrusion detection software, and multi-factor authentication.
- Investigative Skills: Ability to conduct administrative or technical investigations and base findings on a "balance of probabilities".
- Ethical Standards: Candidates must be willing to sign and adhere to a formal Confidentiality Oath.
Preferred Qualifications & Assets
- Education: An IT Diploma or Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Certifications: CompTIA Security+, Network+, or A+; OR any other recognized cybersecurity certification from a trusted vendor.
- Practical Experience: Experience in cybersecurity operations, including work in simulated or lab environments.
- Continuous Learning: Active engagement with cybersecurity training platforms (e.g., TryHackMe, HackTheBox) and a proactive commitment to staying current with annual legislative updates and emerging AI governance
