About The Role
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative Privacy Officer to lead and support division-wide privacy, information governance, and emerging technology compliance initiatives. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the division meets Alberta’s evolving privacy legislation requirements while fostering a culture of responsible information management and digital stewardship.
The successful candidate will work closely with division leadership, schools, staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders to implement privacy compliance programs, coordinate access to information processes, and support the responsible use of artificial intelligence technologies across the division.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation and ongoing management of Alberta’s new and evolving privacy compliance legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Develop, review, and maintain division privacy policies, procedures, standards, and practices.
- Coordinate responses to Access to Information and Protection of Privacy (ATI/POPA) requests in accordance with applicable legislation.
- Provide guidance and support regarding the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and protection of personal information.
- Develop and deliver privacy awareness and training programs for staff, volunteers, and division stakeholders.
- Support schools and departments in identifying and mitigating privacy and cybersecurity risks.
- Collaborate with Information Technology staff to strengthen data governance, cybersecurity awareness, and information protection practices.
- Lead the development and implementation of division-wide Artificial Intelligence (AI) policies, procedures, and responsible-use guidelines.
- Monitor emerging privacy, cybersecurity, and AI trends, legislation, and best practices relevant to the education sector.
- Conduct privacy impact assessments and risk evaluations for new technologies, systems, and initiatives.
- Maintain confidential records and documentation related to privacy investigations, breaches, and compliance activities.
- Support incident response processes related to privacy breaches and information security concerns.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Privacy Management, Information Management, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Protection, Law, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Experience working with privacy legislation, information governance, compliance, or records management.
- Knowledge of Alberta privacy legislation and public-sector compliance requirements is considered an asset.
- Experience responding to access to information requests and conducting privacy assessments is preferred.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity principles, digital governance, and emerging AI technologies.
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to educate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Experience within the education or public sector environment is considered an asset.
