Counsellor, Justice and Court Programs
Part-Time, Contract (Ending March 31st, 2024)

As a Counsellor within Justice & Court Programs, you’ll work with clients to address the underlying issues that led to contact with the justice system, to provide counselling that builds on their strengths, and to help them make steps towards recovery with an aim to improve their quality of life, reduce harm, and prevent future interactions with the justice system. You’ll also be responsible for attending court and communicating with justice partners regarding progress and to advocate for the best interests of your clients.
Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months. Interested applicants who reside in the City of London and are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 2 weeks to be processed and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

WHAT WE'RE OFFERING:- What you'll be making - For this position, rate of pay is based on the individuals professional registration status:
- $28.34 to $31.85 per hour (Regulated Professional Grid), for those registered with the OCSWSSW (as an RSW), CNO (as an RN), COTO, CRPO, CPSO, or CPO
- $23.79 TO $27.37 per hour (Regulated Practicing Professional Grid), for those registered with the OCSWSSW (as an RSSW), CNO (as an RPN)
- The above are initial rates for with grid increases as per policy
- Internal staff members will be placed on the appropriate grid based on their current rate of pay, up to Level 8 of the grid (bit.ly/CompensationPolicyPg16)
- When you'll work - 35 hours over two-week period, Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE:
- Screen and assess client need for supports and services, perform risk assessments and explore immediate therapeutic supports and/or interventions as needed
- In collaboration with the client, develop, implement, evaluate, revise and maintain care plans according to the individuals needs, preferences and process towards their identified goals
- Provide counselling and treatment to those involved with the Justice Centre using various therapy modalities to provide client-centered car
- Provide crisis support and crisis prevention planning
- Liaise with other professionals and with the community for the benefit of clients, while adhering to the principle of confidentiality
- Provide written and verbal reports to justice partners including judge, crowns, defense attorney, probation and parole
- Provide recommendations during court proceedings in high intensity situations to advocate for client rights and needs
- Advocate for client rights as necessary and support self-advocacy.
- Family contact, as required
- Assist clients to problem solve issues as they arise re: ID, OW, medical, housing etc.
- Document and track data required by specific program (eg. use, breaches, sanctions, missed appointments etc.)
- Document and track client incentives and sanctions/consequences
- Attend community meetings, as directed
- Supervise and provide duties to volunteers, as required
- Develop and facilitate groups for specific populations
- May organize and assist with planning for meetings, retreats and events
- Actively participate in clinical supervision
- Provide peer support
Scheduling/Coverage:
- Provide coverage for other team members as volunteered/directed.
- Be available for evening clinical work during regular office hours and on occasion outside of regular hours as needed and when appropriate.
- Provide clinical services in satellite offices and other locations as required
Documentation:
- Complete required documentation related to client as per CMHA TVAMHS standards, discipline-specific guidelines and standards and PHIPA legislation
- Ensure that confidential program/caseload information and material is handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws and CMHA TVAMHS policy
- Effectively manage client movement within and between services including the appropriate sharing of client information, and collaboration with partner services.
Administrative Duties/Teamwork:
- Manage indirect services and administrative duties.
- Attend and actively engage in learning opportunities, events, meetings, case conferencing and team building activities
- Act as a resource to other staff and community partners; seek out and listen to input from other staff and community partners
- Assist with the orientation and training of new agency staff, volunteers and interns/students as designated and needed.

We require the following qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in a related field (primary proof of credentials will be required during the hiring process i.e. original degree/diploma or official transcript)
- Registration with a professional college (i.e. OCSWSSW, CNO, CRPO, CPSO, COTO, CPO)
We prefer the following qualifications:
- Bilingual both official languages, preferred; préférence sera accordée aux candidats qui sont compétents dans les deux langues officielles du Canada
- 2 years' experience working in a related position
- Clinical work experience with youth adults (18-25)
- Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation
- A range of evidence-based interventions, including solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy and motivational interviewing
- Knowledge of legal system and specialized courts
- Knowledge and understanding with black young adults and people of colour, First Nations, Metis and Inuit and 2SLGBTQ+
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, culture and healing practices
- Ability to establish trusting relationships with young adults while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
- Can work variable hours that might include evenings, weekends and weekdays depending on work demands
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with community service providers
- Proficiency with computers, smart phones, variety of software programs including presentation technology
