About The Role
Legal Counsel provides legal advice and services to the University under the supervision and direction of the General Counsel, focusing primarily on the areas of the law relating to access and privacy. The Legal Counsel is the key advisor within the University with respect to the administration of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the “Act”) and is responsible for evaluating legislation, policies and agreements and ensuring overall compliance with the Act. Legal Counsel is also responsible for advancing the continued development, implementation, and maintenance of an effective access and privacy program by processing access to information requests; responding to requests for review and privacy complaints made to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, BC (OIPC); providing privacy advice and designing and implementing education and training sessions.
Qualifications
LLB. Degree and professional designation as a lawyer eligible to practice in BC (e.g., a member in good standing in The Law Society of British Columbia or eligible for membership) with four years of related legal experience divided between private practice, post-secondary sector, industry and/or government, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Excellent knowledge of the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable therein with specific emphasis on the BC University Act and the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
- Excellent knowledge of the University’s policies and processes.
- Ability to manage highly confidential matters where the improper release of information would be injurious or detrimental to the University.
- Ability to manage a large, complex, and diverse legal caseload.
- Ability to uphold exemplary standards of the ethical and professional conduct.
