Job Description:
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Accountable for a range of paralegal responsibilities in support of the Litigation and Enforcement function for FSRA
Key Responsibilities
- Provides support to the Litigation and Enforcement team on various litigation matters for the enforcement of FSRA’s regulatory framework before the Financial Services Tribunal and in the Ontario Court of Justice under the Provincial Offences Act (POA).
- Works with Market Conduct/Compliance teams, Forensic Analysis and Investigations team and counsel to analyze evidence and information, identify additional information that may be required and advise as to the recommended outcomes.
- Actively involved in all stages of administrative proceedings and POA prosecutions, including drafting correspondence, pleadings, orders, motions, affidavits, minutes of settlement, document books and other legal documents, corresponding with parties, opposing counsel, Tribunal and court staff, process servers and other partners and suppliers; actively involved in all aspects of file management.
- If required, appears before Financial Services Tribunal and Ontario Court of Justice to speak to matters, set dates, and conduct matters as appropriate
- Responsible for document management including collection, organization, maintenance of document database, coding, indexing, redacting, and assisting with document production and disclosure.
- Co-ordinates response to Access to Information Requests under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, including identification, review, and production of responsive information.
- Participates in FSRA project teams and committees to provide input and advice on Legal and Enforcement initiatives.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of recognized paralegal program
- Licensed as Paralegal by the Law Society of Ontario
- 5+ years of litigation experience with administrative enforcement proceedings and/or POA prosecutions, ideally gained in a regulatory or in-house litigation department
Knowledge And Skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to thoroughly evaluate alternatives, innovate problem resolution, employ a pro-active approach, and take initiative to resolve problems.
- Highly organized.
- Ability to quickly grasp complex regulatory legal issues.
- Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.
- Proficiency with e-discovery software is an asset.
