Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager of Information Technology, the Applications Programmer Programs business systems software. Performs analysis, design, programming, administration and configuration of software in server, desktop/laptop and tablet/mobile environments. Includes applications implementation, operating systems support or database administration. Provides customer support and troubleshooting software issues. The IT Security Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the District’s information security program to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all technology systems and data. This role provides leadership in cybersecurity, privacy compliance, risk management, and incident response across the District, including schools, administrative sites, and digital learning environments. The position works collaboratively with District leadership, IT Services, school administrators, and external partners to protect sensitive student and employee information and maintain secure operations.
Duties
- Develop, maintain, and implement the District’s Information Security Program, policies, standards, and procedures
- Conduct ongoing risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Oversee security controls for networks, servers, cloud services, and endpoint devices.
- Ensure compliance with relevant BC legislation, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), School Act, and District policies
- Monitor network activity, alerts, and security logs to identify threats and suspicious behaviour.
- Manage cybersecurity tools such as firewalls, endpoint protection, intrusion detection/prevention systems, MFA, and email security platforms.
- Lead vulnerability assessments and support penetration testing initiatives
- Coordinate secure configuration, patching, and system hardening processes.
- Lead the District’s response to cybersecurity incidents, including containment, eradication, recovery, and post-incident review.
- Work with District leadership to ensure compliance with privacy legislation and Ministry of Education requirements.
- Support Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for new software, systems, and cloud services.
- Provide guidance on secure data handling, storage, retention, and destruction
- Collaborate with HR, Learning Services, and other departments on digital safety practices.
- Provide security expertise for IT infrastructure upgrades, cloud migrations, and digital learning initiatives
- Collaborate with external vendors, auditors, and partners to maintain high security standards.·
- Plans, designs, installs and maintains technology systems and databases.
- Designs, programs and maintains custom software solutions.
- Performs database administration functions to ensure information integrity.
- Provides input on information technology strategies.
- Liaises with the ministry, district managers, school administrators, site contacts and outside agencies on technical and software issues.
- Develops technical and user software documentation. Provides technical and user training.
Requirements
· Grade 12.
· Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences.
· Three years of related experience developing, installing and maintaining software systems in a relevant technical environment.
· B.C. Class 5 driver’s license.
