CANARIE connects Canada to the world. Our programs equip researchers, students, and startups in Canada to excel on the global stage.


Together with our 13 provincial and territorial partners, we form Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). This ultra-high-speed network connects Canada’s researchers, educators, and innovators to each other and to global data, technology, and colleagues.


To strengthen the security of Canada’s research and education sector, we collaborate with our partners in the NREN, government, academia, and the private sector to fund, implement, and support cybersecurity initiatives. We also provide identity management services to the academic community and boost Canada’s startups with cloud resources and expertise in emerging technologies.


Established in 1993, CANARIE is a non-profit corporation, with most of our funding provided by the Government of Canada.

The Position: Network Architect


The Network Architect is accountable for contributing to the technical design, implementation of IP network infrastructure, and collaborating on supporting day-to-day operation of the network infrastructure and its services.


This is a full-time, permanent position that reports to CANARIE’s Director, Network Engineering.


Key Responsibilities


  • Operating the CANARIE Network with a focus on responsiveness and reliability
  • Contributing to all facets of network architecture and services development
  • Improving the network reporting mechanisms and user support systems to increase operational efficiency
  • Drafting and reviewing designs for technical soundness, and making key infrastructure decisions
  • Developing and maintaining documentation, including requirements, and specifications
  • Collaborating with network architects, software developers, and security professionals
  • Collaborating with partners nationally and internationally,
  • Driving deployment and adoption of advanced network services
  • Responsible for tracking network reliability, analyzing data and generate reporting
  • On a rotation basis, providing 24 x 7 on call support for the CANARIE network
  • Travel may occasionally be required
  • Other related duties and responsibilities, as required

What You Bring


Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a suitable combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant progressive experience in designing, configurating and operating routed infrastructure
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience with building and running large scale, high-available and fault-tolerant network infrastructure
  • Experience with major carriers and vendors, navigating the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for dark fiber, managed services, and equipment selection and installation
  • Experience leveraging scripts to maintain infrastructure (i.e. bash, Python)
  • Experience with datacenter and telecom sites is desirable
  • Experience with optical network technologies, such as optical coherent technology, Wavelength Division Multiplexer is desirable
  • Experience with Kubernetes considered is desirable


Skills

  • Expertise in clearly communicating complex technical information
  • Ability to lead collaborative efforts with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving to address complex network infrastructure challenges


Technical Proficiencies

  • Advanced knowledge of IPv4/6, MPLS, Segment Routing and BGP
  • Experience with the Nokia SROS network operating system
  • Operational experience in Linux OS: Management and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
