Over 100,000 businesses and millions of people use 1Password to protect their most important information, and we believe those people – and the companies they work for – shouldn’t have to choose between security and productivity. We see security as a human challenge, rather than a technological one. It’s hard work, but our mission has always been to ease the tension between security and convenience and help people navigate the digital world without fear or friction. Human-centric security is part of our DNA, but human-centricity is also the backbone of our culture. We encourage big ideas and new ways of working that help us to make the online world a safer place for everyone.
Our Technical Program Management (TPM) team is at the center of the engine that drives our teams to produce great software. For 1Password’s Tech organization, scaling execution is a critical focus as we grow. The TPM team acts as a force multiplier for the Tech organization by driving cross-functional, technical initiatives. We align teams both inside and outside of Tech to enable timely decisions, uncover gaps, and guide programs towards well-defined, successful outcomes. We use our communication, technical, and organizational skills to help the entire Tech org solve its highest priority problems. The TPM org supports programs across all of Tech, including Engineering, Security, Dev Ops, and IT.
1Password is looking for a leader to support the TPM org. As the organizational lead for TPM, you’ll work with your team as well as senior leaders across Tech and Product to define the role, mission, vision, and roadmap for the TPM function at 1Password. You’ll help build an organization to drive our highest priority technical efforts, setting the TPM org up to be a key component of the success of our products.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
- Experience leading large teams of managers and TPMs (20+).
- A passion for building inclusive and collaborative teams, with experience hiring both managers and senior TPMs, as well mentoring leaders on both the individual contributor and management tracks.
- Over 5 years of experience managing TPMs, including at least 3 years of managing managers.
- Experience managing multiple TPM teams, as well as delivering programs that span multiple organizations.
- Able to effectively drive collaboration, alignment, and execution with peers across multiple disciplines.
- Ability to communicate about programs up, down, and sideways, ensuring that stakeholders are connected to the components of programs relevant to them.
- Experience supporting regular (e.g. quarterly/yearly) planning across multiple engineering organizations.
- Experience supporting technical programs such that you'll be able to participate in technical discussions and understand the work that is going on in the programs the TPM organization supports. Able to use these experiences to empower the team to support engineers in making tough technical decisions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to drive discussions with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience communicating about large, strategic programs to senior leaders helping them understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how they can help the program succeed.
- Ability to describe programs that you or the team is working on with confidence and depth of understanding, becoming a spokesperson for the team within the company and outside as well.
- Ability to operate autonomously, effectively prioritize programs and information, and make good judgment calls. Have a demonstrated ability to scope and lead complex multi-team initiatives.
What you might also have:
- Experience working with, or ideally managing, teams in multiple geographies.
- Experience defining the role of TPM and communicating it to stakeholders who are new to the function.
- Experience building program frameworks for prioritization, initiation, execution, reporting, and closure from the ground up.
- Experience leading programs that support delivery of endpoint and SaaS products.
What you can expect:
- Set and support strategic direction for a set of teams that drive programs critical to our company’s mission.
- Work with the TPM team as well as senior leaders across Tech and Product to define the role, mission, vision, and roadmap for the TPM function at 1Password.
- Drive alignment and be responsible for the results of the TPM org in support of broader company objectives.
- Work with cross-functional partners to deliver the best solutions for millions of customers.
- Help engineering teams resolve dependencies and contention within and without to deliver the highest priority programs.
- Grow individual contributors and managers to reach their potential.
- Recruit and retain top tier talent in a fast growing environment.
Even if you don't tick all those boxes, we'd like to hear from you.
The most important thing you can bring to this job is the drive to dive in, get the work done, and fix root causes instead of treating symptoms. We believe in continuous learning and support professional development on the job with a budget to back it up. If you bring a desire to do the right thing for our customers, a sense of ownership over the product you work on, and scaling efficient execution of programs, we want to hear from you.
